Does your mind ever wander?
Mine sure does—and it loves to daydream about all the what ifs.
What if I had gone to college?
What if I had paid more attention in high school?
What if I had raised my children differently… been more dedicated… done more?
What if… what if… what if.
Here’s the hard truth: we can’t change the past.
What’s done is done.
And yet isn’t it strange how our brains still try to drag us back there—especially at night?
My mind can keep me from falling asleep.
It can push me from one task to the next.
And it can even wander off when I’m reading my Bible, so I can’t stay focused.
I could blame it on the devil trying to distract me from my goals.
I could blame it on ADHD (and honestly, that might be part of it).
But for me, I think it’s a mix of two things:
a lack of discipline… with a little ADHD sprinkled on top.
If you’re like me, you don’t need a big speech—you need something practical that helps right now.
And the good thing is, you and I are not broken… we’re human.
So forgive yourself, so you can live in peace.
Now, if you’re like me, you don’t need a lot of hype—you need practical options that help right now.
Here are 7 gentle reset ideas you can try today.
Reset #1: Sing Uplifting Songs
Singing has helped me find peace when everything else feels like it’s falling apart.
Remember: the joy of the Lord is our strength.
Praise songs and uplifting music lift our spirits to a higher place.
Sing out loud—or sing quietly in your heart.
Either way, it works.
Reset #2: Write It Out (Then Make a Simple Plan)
Write every thought, worry, and to-do item out on paper.
Then organize it.
First, cast the worry off—you don’t need it.
Worrying will steal your joy.
Next, focus your thoughts on what truly matters.
Seeking wisdom.
Setting your goals.
Personal needs.
And finally, that to-do list.
Rearrange it with the most important item at the top.
Then the next.
And the next.
Start at the top and work down.
What doesn’t get done today can be done tomorrow.
You’ll be amazed how much calmer—and more productive—you feel.
Reset #3: Lower the Noise
Lower the noise level.
Dim the lights.
Light a candle.
Read something uplifting (I highly recommend the Bible).
And relax.
Set a 15-minute “No Input” window.
No phone.
No news.
No scrolling.
Just quiet.
Breathe.
Be still.
Listen.
Reset #4: Move Your Body Gently
Take a walk.
Do some stretching.
Your body was created to move, so do what comes natural.
Even a few minutes of movement can release tension and help your mind settle down.
Reset #5: Talk Back to Anxious Thoughts
When your thoughts turn anxious…
When you start feeling overwhelmed…
When you’re sad and your mind keeps running to the worst-case scenario…
Simply say: NO.
This is where Reset #1 really works.
Keep finding things to rejoice about.
Sing louder than the storm.
After all, you are an overcomer.
Reset #6: Comfort Your Body
Sip some tea.
Hold a warm mug.
Take a relaxing bath or shower.
Tell your wandering mind to back off.
This is me time—and everyone needs me time.
Sometimes your body needs comfort before your mind can quiet down.
Reset #7: Fill Your Mind with Something Strong
Practice memorizing uplifting poems, Scripture, or positive encouraging words.
Some people say they can’t memorize anything.
But if you can memorize the words to your favorite song—or the alphabet—you can memorize more than you think.
You can do it!
Bonus Reset: Just Breathe (And Let Your Mind Go Quiet)
This one takes practice, but it’s powerful.
Breathe slowly and gently.
Let your shoulders drop.
Unclench your jaw.
And as best as you can, let your mind go quiet for a moment.
When useless thoughts try to push back in, don’t wrestle with them.
Let them pass by.
Then return to your breath.
Little by little, you can learn to push those useless thoughts away.
And when you do, you’ve won a battle.
Closing Thought
Peace isn’t always something that happens to us.
Sometimes peace is something we practice—one small choice at a time.
And when our minds won’t shut off, we don’t need shame…
We need a gentle reset.
Closing question:
Which reset do you need most right now—and what’s one small step you can take today to quiet your mind and protect your peace?
A Simple Prayer
Lord, You know how noisy my thoughts can get.
You know the worries I carry, the regrets I replay, and the things I can’t control.
Please quiet my heart and calm my mind.
Help me forgive myself, release what I cannot change, and rest in Your peace.
Fill me with Your joy and strength.
Teach me to be still in Your presence and trust You with what’s ahead.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
